Date: Wed 01 August 2007 Category: Legislation Issue No: 1880 Cabinet yesterday approved a revised version of the Integrated Coastal Management Bill for tabling in Parliament. The original Bill was gazetted in December last year, and public comment invited on the measure. Environmental Affairs Minister Marthinus van Schalkwyk said comments received indicated overwhelming support for the Bill and its principles. "These comments have now been incorporated into a new version of the Bill," Van Schalkwyk said. The draft legislation aims to provide a legal and administrative framework that will promote co-operative, co-ordinated and integrated coastal development; to preserve, protect and enhance the status of the coastal environment; to ensure coastal resources are managed in the interests of the whole community; to ensure there is equitable access to the opportunities and benefits derived from the coast; and to give effect to certain of South Africa’s international law obligations.
